Well, we didn’t see enough of them! In any movie adaptation, ever! Funny, because in Bram Stoker’s classic novel, still even with limited presence, the participation of this trio of brides (or slaves?) of Dracula’s is incredibly erotic in its subtext. Let’s take a look at three very important adaptation of the story that at least tried to give us a glimpse of these sexy but still creepy creatures.

Dracula (1931)
Is it still necessary to present that legendary production, that is still revered and affectionately parodied to this day? Very creaky but still beloved, Tod Browning presents us with a very peculiar trio of Brides, that seems to be gliding on the ground instead of merely walking. We think more of blood-sucking leeches than bats in their short scene. For me, they are without a doubt my favorite chill of the entire movie. They were played by Geraldine Dvorak, Cornelia Thaw and Dorothy Tree, who replayed their respective roles in the Spanish-speaking adaptation Drácula the same year.

Count Dracula (1977)
The British television production gave me quite a fright as a teen, with another trio of Brides taking great delight in a good old-fashioned bloody feast. A quick shot of their delighted faces licking gore from their lips and fangs gave me quite a jolt, an unexpected surprise coming from a TV movie. But even with a limited budget, this is still an incredibly faithful version of the tale. This time the actresses were Susie Hickford, Belinda Meuldijk and Sue Vanner.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
A more modern twist meant a lot more sex-appeal, as seen here when the Brides try to seduce Jonathan Harker. Even an actor as wooden as Keanu Reeves could still offer a portrayal that is a mix of delighted eroticism and utter revulsion. Of course, it helps being surrounded by Monica Bellucci, Michaela Bercu and Florina Kendrick. Single-minded and very fleshy, these Brides are sensual in a very feral way.

I’m still waiting for a movie solely devoted to these three ladies, with info background and up to date data. How about it? A new franchise just waiting to happen…
