Posters, Raquel Welch

If you’re a wrestling fan, you’ll remember a couple of years back when The Undertaker crucified Stone Cold Steve Austin on his devilish symbol… and this caused quite a stir, the segment actually being edited out on Canadian television! Now imagine being back in 1966 and witness the following image by photographer Terry O’Neill, where Raquel Welch was on the verge of stardom for her role in One Million Years BC. O’Neill claimed that this piece was a reflection on the ideal of womanhood of the time, as women were valued only for their sexuality. Fans probably didn’t care for the deep thought… but controversy brewed nevertheless. As you can guess, the real official poster presented a less provocative Raquel pose… but still sexy.

This strange and unique 1929 thriller from Danish director Benjamin Christensen is based on a 1927 novel by Abraham Merritt. Many peculiar characters are involved and some innovative makeup creations are on hand. How about a remake, but with the action still based in the twenties? Or better yet, a new sitcom with these characters? C’mon! Just look at them!
There’s no official copy available from home viewing, it seems, as prints are very rare and scattered around the globe in various forms and image conditions. Of one of its many ahead of its time scenes, there’s a gorilla that becomes very interested in a naked and chained up Asian lady!
This rare photograph popped up on eBay some time back and here are your main cast members: back row we find Creighton Hale, Sojin, Nora Cecil; front row we have William V. Mong, Thelma Todd and Charles Gemora as (obviously) the gorilla.

Naked female flesh, living or unliving, has been a common vision in the majority of Jean Rollin’s films. His own personal visual style has still a haunting quality, even when viewing his first works. Here are some posters that shows a glimpse of what can be expected when entering the French director’s unique world:

Claudia Cardinale, Brigitte Bardot, Posters

The first movie that ever gave me an erotic thrill (even when just seeing its trailer on television in the early 70s!) remains Les pétroleuses, a titanic meeting between two of Europe’s biggest sex-symbols: Brigitte Bardot and Claudia Cardinale. Mainly known as a more or less dumb comedy, its most memorable scene is the slugfest in an oil filed between BB and CC. Oddly, this film doesn’t seem to exist yet as a Region 1 DVD.
As for this poster, well I just adore seeing these two sexy stars posing in typical masculine western clothing while still remaining gorgeous.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what movie poster would you want awkwardly stuck on a coconut tree to accompany you until the end of days? In my case, simple:

An exemplary action movie starring three marvelous actresses (Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui, Maggie Cheung) as fascinating super-heroines. This could be my favorite movie poster of all time. I will be revisiting The Heroic Trio in depth in the near future, so stay tuned.
